Ireland's Biggest Banger Bash - Shamwreck 2011 Nuttscorner Oval - Sunday 17th April 2pm

Nuttscorner Oval will once again host Ireland’s biggest Banger Racing event when drivers from all across the British Isles converge on the Co Antrim venue for Shamwreck 2011 on Sunday April 17th. Already a host of England’s top Unlimited cc National Banger exponents have booked in for what is sure to be a day of non-stop action. It will be smashes and crashes galore as the massive field are whittled down to one champion driver.

The infamous Bears team from England will return to Ulster once again, with their sights firmly fixed on regaining the Shamwreck title, having taken an impressive hat-trick of wins before only just losing out last season to Team Extreme's Mark Dalgarno.Karly Day claimed the title in '09, and with Ashley & Justin Riley winning in 2008 and 2007 respectively, they will most certainly be the team to beat on the day. They are well known throughout Europe as the hard hitters of Banger racing, and they have destroyed all in their path in previous Nuttscorner encounters. “Nutty” Nigel Riley and his crew are coming in large numbers this time to retain the title, with a superb ten of their red, white and blue cars set to grace the raceway.

The Levellers from northern England are also making a return visit after a few years for Shamwreck and they always put on a great show, whilst it is hoped Team Extreme will return after their star showing last term, when Matty Threlkeld took on the might of Nutty Nige and The Bears in his Yank before team mate Dalgarno took the title.

A sizeable contingent will also travel north from the Republic of Ireland for Shamwreck 2011, and it is they who are the backbone of the National Bangers at Nuttscorner Oval. Steven Reynolds would probably lay claim to being the top Banger driver at Nuttscorner Oval, but to his cost has become quite a target for the others of late. The Dublin-based Team Houndog of the Gilshenan boys and Joey O’Toole will be out this time to run well, whilst local Points Champion Keith McMahon will be another not to rule out. Others to watch will be Mark Hughes, Anto Grenden and Stevo McGrath to name a few, along with Mark Cassidy, Tony Gelston, Barry McCardle and Alan O'Neill.

Leading the local Ulster charge will be Team Buckle. Davy Patton and Jonny Murdock are always in the thick of it, while young drivers Kieran McIvor and Steven Bolton will also be ones to watch, alongside David Owens.

Shamwreck 2010 was hailed by many as one of the meetings of last season, anywhere in the UK. 2011 should, if anything, be even better. Nuttscorner Oval – the Home of Irish Banger Racing.

Support action on the day comes from the 2.0 Hot Rods, Lightning Rods and ProStocks. It promises to be an action packed session of short oval racing, with the first race getting underway at 2pm.

What Are National Bangers?
Probably the most spectacular formula to be seen in action at Nuttscorner Oval, the National Bangers have wide public appeal to those who like to see the old MOT failures driven to destruction. A minimum of preparation is required (although some drivers do spend many hours fine tuning and painting their vehicles), and contact is actively encouraged leading to some breathtaking smashes and rollovers as the drivers try to destroy the opposition. The National Bangers race in different guises during the year, some events being for unlimited cc machines, some under 2 Litre or 1600cc and a Big Van Banger meeting is held annually. Certainly not a sport for the faint hearted - most meetings usually finish with a Destruction Derby where the last vehicle moving declared the winner!
